Getting Started

I'm here. What do I do?

Fill up Your Places. Smorgie helps you to remember places where you like to eat or places you want to try. Just add them to Your Places when you see them on Smorgie or use the search box in the header.

What's the deal with Lists?

Create a list of places you like according to cuisine, location, if they have free crayons for the kiddoes, easy parking, anything you like. It's also a great way of sharing a bunch of places you want to recommend to a friend. Add places to your list from all those ones in Your Places.

Are all of my Lists stored in my account?

Yes, all of the contents of your lists are saved within your account. Click Your Lists at the top of the page to view and edit them, or share them with other people.

I made a list, now what?

Your list will be saved so that you may refer to it for future dining out. You can make more than one list for different neighborhoods, types of occasion, etc. You can also put a place in as many lists as you want. It's up to you.

Who else can see my places and lists?

Your lists, places, and the notes and photos you add are publicly available for other users of Smorgie. Look around, you may find someone else with lists you find useful.

How do I share my Lists?

Every list has links at the top of the page for Facebook, Twitter and email. Just choose the way that works best for you. It's a great way to share recommendations, plans for a night out, or places you've been to.

What's this Friends feature all about?

If people you know are on Smorgie, or you just see someone with interesting places, you can add them to your Friends page for future reference. Just click the + Friend button beside any Smorgie member's profile. They will be added to your Friends page so that you can find them, and their lists and places, at the click of a button.

About Smorgie

What is different about Smorgie?

Smorgie helps you save places to remember, share and try. After listening to the opinions of people who like to eat out, we built a tool that helps you save places you like and share them with others in a simple, helpful way.

What cities does Smorgie cover?

Smorgie works for any U.S. city, feel free to enter restaurants from around the country and use it wherever you are.

Can I get Smorgie on my phone?

Yes, check out our iPhone app available in the App Store.

What's the cost?

Smorgie is 100% free for you to use! We do have to find ways to stay in business so we can also enjoy our city's dining scene. We'll be experimenting with different sponsorship approaches, but nothing will interfere with letting you organize, share, and capture your eating experiences.

Why aren't there any star ratings?

We'll be honest: Everyone rates things differently and we end up scratching our heads trying to figure out where to eat. So we thought we'd try a different approach: Instead of stars, on Smorgie you'll find places that people want to remember for being great, not ratings and reviews that people wrote to get something off their chest.

Who is behind Smorgie?

Smorgie is brought to you by the Design and Innovation group at Gannett, the parent company of USA TODAY, 80+ local newspapers, and 20+ local television stations. Designed using a human-centered approach, we talked to quite a few people who like to eat, to find out how we could help them enjoy eating out even more. We're also pretty passionate about eating in whatever city we find ourselves, so we're excited to have a new tool we can use, too!
